Lymphatic Drainage

When it comes to our health, our first line of internal defense is our lymphatic system. It is a massive network that is more extensive than our circulatory system. Specialized lymphocytes such as T cells and B cells circulate continuously throughout the lymph and blood at a rate of about 125 ml per hour in search of pathogens. The job of our lymphatic system is to pick up pathogens and waste products from our blood and move these through a series of vessels that expand into areas of lymphoid tissue called nodes. This is where pathogens and wastes are destroyed by macrophages and masses of lymphocytes. After the lymph fluid is cleansed it then returns to the bloodstream through the subclavian veins.

The lymph system plays a critical role in maintaining fluid balance, preventing edema. Lymphatic vessels act as drains to collect excess interstitial fluid from arterial capillaries and return it to venous capillaries before it reaches the heart. This helps our cardiovascular system to function properly.

Lymph fluid relies on the physical action of the skeletal muscles and diaphrapm for transport, as there is no pumping organ (such as the heart pumping blood) to force the lymph to move. However, there are a large number of valves that permit one directional flow, which helps to keep it moving in the right direction. Since lymph movement is slow and uneven, it is extremely important that we get adequate physical activity to aid this action. The lymph can flow up to 15 times faster with exercise than without it.

If we are to keep our bodies healthy, it is critical that we keep the lymph open and moving, especially as we are detoxifying. Blocked lymph can lead to a healing crisis, or even illness. Muscle-contracting exercises, as well as rebounding, can help to keep the lymph moving.

Tips for Keeping The Lymph Moving
  • Do skin brushing every day before bathing or showering.
  • Rebounding—jumping on a small trampoline (do not do this if you have a bad back or bad knees).
  • Walking, running, or cycling will help get the lymph moving in the legs.
  • Weight training as well as stomach cruches—contracting the muscles—will keep the lymph moving in the upper body and arms.
  • Full body exercising such as pilates will help to keep the lymph moving throughout the body.
  • Lymph draining massage is beneficial (check with your local massage therapist).
  • Using a light beam generator 2-4 times per week in conjunction with exercise, skin brushing, and massage is optimal.
